Similar to Daily 5, during our math block we do Guided Math. It is a time where students are working in small groups and independently on various math tasks. Sometimes they are working with technology, other times math manipulatives. They always have the opportunity to work with me in a small group setting. This allows me to informally assess each student's progress and explain concepts based on the needs of particular students in the group.

With the cold weather coming, children aren't playing outside for too long which for some means more video games. Before letting your gamer go, encourage them to do a round of X-tra Math. No need to worry, students know their login information already!
Because of our shortened week in literacy (due to the Halloween party/parade) we will be taking the spelling test on Thursday. Also, we will not have our literacy test until the following Friday (November 7th). As always if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call/email.
1. On Thursday we started cursive but first we studied the curves.
2. Also we did some area and perimeter. Are you familiar with using QR codes? I have begun to "dabble" into them and have found them SUPER cool! If you haven't used them before, you can download a "QR Reader" to your phone or tablet and scan any code. I have attached my very first QR code which links you to a YouTube video of I Wanna Iguana, which is our story this week. If you wouldn't mind taking a moment to comment below regarding your thoughts about QR codes, I would greatly appreciate. I would love to hear some parent feedback!
Today we did a "two-digit subtraction" math scoot! Mark sure to ask your child what it means to do a math scoot ... we had lots of fun!
Tomorrow your student will bring home your scheduled conference time. I look forward to meeting with you!
I'm sure many have heard the question "Why don't we have school today?" Often students do not know why they get a day off school. Take a moment to watch the Movie of the Week on BrainPop Jr., the link is below.
BrainPop Jr. Link - Columbus Day Video Open House will take place tomorrow from 6:30-7:15. Following the event, please join the EPTO for their Ice Cream Social Event.
Daily 5 is a major component of our classroom. Each day students have the opportunity to choose what they would like to do during this time. The selections include read to self, buddy ready, word work, writing or listen to reading. All components include curriculum based work as well as supplemental materials I have added. While students are working independently I am working with a small group of students on reading or writing. Below is a picture of Daily 5 from a "teachers perspective". As you can see there is a small group of students working with me at the bean table, while the rest are working independently throughout the room.
